One of the most common problems when adding Smart Dimming to an existing UK home is the lack of a neutral cable at the light switch.
Many older properties only have a permanent live and switched live at the switch. That's fine for a conventional switch, but Smart Dimmers require a permanent live and neutral to keep the WiFi module powered.
So what do you do if you want Smart Dimming without running a new cable to the switch?
By combining a 4 Gang Wi-Fi Smart Switch with a Wi-Fi Smart Inline Dimmer, it's possible to create a practical solution – and the four buttons can even be used to give you instant access to different dimming levels.
The Concept
Instead of trying to make the wall switch actually dim the lighting circuit, we separate the two functions.
The Inline Smart Dimmer is installed at the ceiling rose, junction box or another suitable accessible location where permanent live, neutral and the connection to the light are available.
This is the device that actually switches and dims the light fitting.
The 4 Gang Smart Switch on the wall doesn't need to be physically connected to the light at all.
Instead, it becomes a smart control panel.
For example, the four buttons could be programmed as:
Button 1 – Light ON/OFF
Button 2 – Light at 30%
Button 3 – Light at 60%
Button 4 – Light at 100%
This gives you simple physical control from the wall, while retaining full dimming control through the App or Alexa.
But What About the Missing Neutral?
This is where the existing wiring can potentially be used differently.
A conventional UK lighting switch will commonly have:
- Permanent Live
- Switched Live returning to the light
Once the Inline Smart Dimmer has been installed at the light fitting, the wall switch no longer needs a switched-live connection to the light.
That existing conductor can be repurposed to provide the neutral required to power the 4 Gang Smart Switch.
At the ceiling/junction point, the former switched-live conductor is disconnected from its original switching function and connected to neutral.
At the switch end, that same conductor becomes the neutral connection for the Smart Switch.
The Smart Switch can then be powered by:
Permanent Live + Neutral
There is no electrical connection between the Smart Switch outputs and the lighting circuit.
Important: A conductor that has previously been identified as a switched live must be correctly re-identified as neutral at both ends when its function is changed. The existing circuit must also be checked to establish exactly how it has been wired before making any alterations.
Installing the Inline Dimmer
The Inline Wi-Fi Smart Dimmer is installed separately, typically at the ceiling rose, junction box or in a suitable accessible enclosure.
It requires:
- Permanent Live
- Neutral
- Dimmed output to the light
The Inline Dimmer now becomes the actual lighting controller.
When the dimmer receives an instruction from the App/Alexa, it changes the power being supplied to the light accordingly.
So there is no physical switching connection required between the wall switch and Inline Dimmer, they communicate through the App instead.
Setting Up the Four Buttons
Once both devices have been installed and added to the App, automations can be created linking each button to the Inline Dimmer.
A useful configuration could be:
Button 1 – Normal On/Off
Press Button 1 and the Inline Dimmer switches ON or OFF.
This becomes the everyday light switch.
Button 2 – Low Level
Create an automation:
Button 2 pressed → Inline Dimmer ON → Brightness 30%
Ideal for low-level evening lighting.
Button 3 – Medium Level
Create another automation:
Button 3 pressed → Inline Dimmer ON → Brightness 60%
Useful as the normal comfortable lighting level.
Button 4 – Full Brightness
Finally:
Button 4 pressed → Inline Dimmer ON → Brightness 100%
Ideal when maximum light output is required.
You now effectively have a four-button lighting scene controller without installing any additional control wiring between the switch and dimmer.
You Have Full Smart Control
The four buttons provide convenient physical control, but they don't limit what you can do with the Inline Dimmer.
You can still use the App/Alexa to:
- Set any brightness level
- Switch the light remotely
- Create schedules
- Create countdown timers
- Create scenes
- Automate lighting
- Link lighting with other SmartLife devices
- Add compatible voice control
So the wall switch provides quick everyday control while the App provides the more advanced functionality.
Why Use Four Buttons for One Light?
At first glance, using a 4 Gang switch to control one lighting circuit might sound excessive.
In practice, it can make Smart Dimming much easier to use.
With a conventional dimmer, you have to adjust the brightness until you reach the level you want.
With this arrangement, your most commonly used settings are available with a single touch:
ON/OFF | 30% | 60% | 100%
And those levels are only examples.
You could just as easily configure:
ON/OFF | 20% | 50% | 80%
or choose levels appropriate to the room.
For a lounge, for example, Button 2 might provide low evening lighting, Button 3 normal lighting and Button 4 maximum brightness for cleaning or other tasks.
A Useful Retrofit Solution
The biggest advantage of this approach is that it makes use of the wiring that is already there.
Instead of trying to install a neutral cable from the ceiling to the switch, the existing switched-live conductor can be repurposed because the Inline Dimmer has taken over the electrical switching of the light.
That makes this particularly useful for retrofit projects where:
- There is no neutral in the switch back box
- A Smart Dimmer requiring a neutral cannot normally be installed
- Running new cables would mean damaging finished walls or ceilings
It turns what would otherwise be a wiring problem into a smart home automation solution.
Before You Install
This solution involves altering the function of existing mains wiring and should only be undertaken by someone competent to work on the circuit.
The existing wiring must be positively identified rather than relying on cable colours alone, and any conductor whose purpose is changed must be correctly identified.
You should also make sure that the lighting load is compatible with the Inline Dimmer. In particular, LED lamps and LED drivers should be dimmable and compatible with the dimming technology being used.
Smart Dimming Without the Rewire
Smart technology gives us the opportunity to think differently about traditional lighting circuits.
The wall switch no longer necessarily needs to electrically switch the light.
By installing the Smart Dimmer where the permanent live and neutral already exist, and using a 4 Gang Smart Switch as a wireless SmartLife controller, you can create a flexible Smart Dimming solution using the existing cabling.
And rather than simply solving the missing-neutral problem, the four-button arrangement actually gives the homeowner something extra – one-touch access to their favourite lighting levels.
